Oh god, all of this. It's FATIGUING. I heard two people talking the other day - non-writers - about how the "long dash" is AI, and it just crumpled my heart. We writers have long used the em-dash and now it's something we have to defend against AI. Nothing. Nothing is sacred. Nothing feels beautiful or interesting or free. But thank you for writing this. Beautiful, and the anecdote about demanding artists is so spot on
It is absolutely exhausting. Especially when it's put on the writer to now, almost obsessively so, worry if these very well known "long dashes" 🙄 and other "common" words & phrases are going to flag to others as AI written. I stumped upon a mutual recently who had "quiet hum" in her IG post & I would bet my life on the fact that this person has never so much has sneezed in direction of gen AI & wondered how many people (wrongfully) assumed she generated her words. It made me sad. But this is our reality now. And please, please, let us hope it is temporary!!!

YES. You bring up such a good point, now I'm considering editing my post to include: I was not using ChatGPT & therefore assumed nobody else was either so I was very much caught off guard!!

Exactly....it's not voracious readers who tend to use AI to generate books, because those people tend to respect the passion that goes into the craft. It's people who've never read a book in their life and think it's a quick way to get money/validation/whatever they're searching for to fill the emptiness in their soul.
Yes. I agree! There's an attachment to the idea of having their name on a book, but not the idea of actually, well, writing. It's almost limerence, somewhat?!
